I didn't know about the free podcasts! Honestly I think I have all of his speeches though on CD. I talked to Mark Watts a few years back and he got me a huge collection of Alan's speeches. It's wonderful. I recently ordered the four CD set "Do You Do It, or Does It Do You?" It had some speeches that the other set did not have.

I know this thread is old but I have to note the Greatness of this book. I read it first ten years ago and it revolutionized my view on life. I've since given it to tons of friends and watched the exact same thing happen to them! Especially over the past few months.

greets

in terms of basic content,
the book is divided into two halves:

the first deals primarily with the history of buddhism and the development of zen. i did not read that half.

the second shifts fundamentally into the philosophy and meaning of zen. i read that half, and loved it.

now that you've read the first half, you are well-positioned to absorb the koans of the second.

absorb in bliss

I will let you know my thinkers once I am done.

This book was extremely informative. I liked the way that he went into the history of Buddhism and explained the language. It was wonderful for me, a lay person.

there are a multitude of paths.

alan has written and spoken about many.

the key is to find the right one for you. or not. you really don't "HAVE" to do anything.

This is a good read kind of a way to find info about Zen if that is at all possible. Maybe you will discover if Zen practice fits in your life. After years of practice I have concluded that it is not for everyone. It can be very painful and tedious at times so if your not down with that then look elsewhere. If ou are down then dont just sit there. Go sit with someone!

my favorite part of this whole book is a haiku poem he cites by Ryokan. something like:

    left it behind

anything you read by allan will inspire you.

as i recall,(it's been a long time), this book does deal mainly with zen.

have a listen to his "out of your mind" lecture series that i posted on another thread.

it sums up his basic ideas quite nicely.
